MISS LARISSA

Larissa Joy Laughlin, known to students as Miss Larissa, is a professionally trained music educator, performer, and studio owner with a passion for helping children discover confidence, creativity, and joy through music.

She holds a degree from Point Park University, where she studied music and performance, and brings both professional performing experience and 20 years of hands-on teaching to her work with young learners.

As the owner of Joy of Music & Arts in Florida, Miss Larissa has taught private piano and voice lessons, led group acting classes and choirs, developed and directed theatre camps, and guided students from a wide range of ages and abilities. She is known for her warm and encouraging teaching style, and makes musical concepts approachable for children and accessible for families.

Her teaching philosophy is rooted in a simple belief: Children learn best when they feel safe, engaged, encouraged, and excited to participate.

That belief helped shape the JoyMakers™ flagship course. Through Music Begins Here, families can experience the same care, structure, and encouragement that have made Miss Larissa’s in-person programs so beloved, now available anytime and anywhere through JoyMakers™.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my child too young or too inexperienced for this course?

No prior music experience is required. Music Begins Here was specifically designed as a first step into music for children ages 4–6. The lessons introduce concepts gradually through listening, movement, creativity, and participation.

Do I need a musical background to help my child?

Not at all. Miss Larissa guides every lesson step-by-step, and parent participation is completely optional. Families do not need musical training or prior experience to get started.

How much time does each lesson take?

Most units consist of 5 videos and are designed to be completed in approximately 20 minutes. If possible, we encourage setting aside a dedicated time once a week as your "Joy Day" to establish a creative family ritual around music learning.

What if we can’t stay on a perfect schedule?

That’s completely okay. Music Begins Here was intentionally designed for real family life. You can move through the course at your own pace, revisit favorite lessons, and return whenever your family is ready without worrying about falling behind.

Is this just another educational screen-time program?

No. Children are regularly invited to move, sing, listen, create, respond, and participate throughout the lessons. The goal is active engagement, not passive consumption. Each unit is structured around The FOCUS Framework™ with optional printable Joy Journal activities and prompts that extend the lesson beyond the screen and encourage family connection and real-world discovery.

What materials or instruments do we need?

Very little. Most activities use the child’s voice, movement, imagination, or everyday household items. Basic crayons and craft supplies can be used with the optional Joy Journal printable activities that correspond with each lesson. Families are never expected to purchase expensive instruments or equipment to participate meaningfully.

Will this replace private music lessons?

Music Begins Here is designed as a foundational introduction to music, not a substitute for advanced private instruction. Many families use it as a first step before pursuing piano lessons, voice lessons, theatre programs, dance classes, or other arts opportunities.

Will JoyMakers™ have courses for older children in the future?

Music Begins Here is the first course in the JoyMakers™ learning ecosystem and was designed specifically for preschool and kindergarten children. Additional courses and expanded creative pathways for older learners are planned as the JoyMakers™ collection grows.

Thank you for considering being part of our journey from the very beginning.

Early families play an important role in helping shape what comes next.
